Finding Utopia is an exposé of the journeys of seven emerging international artists currently based in New York. Hailing from Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Japan, and France, the artists followed the footsteps of their heroes and heroines – Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, Yoko Ono, Ai Wei-Wei, Cai Guo-Qiang, and Wangechi Mutu – leaving their homes and comfort zones, and finding their utopia in New York. In this foreign, unforgiving art landscape, the artists have struggled; they have made mistakes; they have been disheartened; but they have never given up embracing New York as their artistic nirvana. From creating a studio practice in the budding artistic neighbourhood of Bushwick in Brooklyn, to making ends meet by running exhibition spaces in the Lower East Side, to returning to art school to develop new techniques, these artists lead vastly different lives but share the same dream: to ‘make it’ as genuine in New York.
